Common Problem

Many problems can occur when you are painting - often together. The defect may be caused when you are preparing the surface or applying the paint, or even during storage.

Listed below are some of the common problem with Causes & Prevention :

Chalking Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Disintegration of the paint binder due to UV attack
  • Use of interior paint for exterior surface
  • Remove the unstable paint films.
  • Allow wall to try thoroughly, and repaint with recommended paint like Nippon Weatherbond
Adulteration of paint - Make sure paint is not adulterated with foreign materials

Blistering Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Caused by moisture drawn through the wall to paint-wall interface
  • Remove the unstable paint films.
  • Remove the unstable paint film. Allow wall to dry thoroughly, and repaint with recommended paint.

Flaking and Peeling Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Poor flexibility of paint film; unable to adjust to wall movement
  • Wrong choice of paint
  • Poor surface preparation
  • Remove the unstable paint films. Allow wall to dry thoroughly, and repaint with Recommended paint.

Colour Fading and Discoloration Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Sensitive pigments deteriorate on exposure to sunlight or unsuitable chemical environment
  • Alkali attack onto sensitive pigments.
  • Remove the unstable paint films.
  • Allow wall to dry thoroughly, and repaint with correct choice of colour and paint.

Algae/Fungus Growth Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Continuous dampness of surface with dirt accumulation.
  • Insufficient fungicide / algaecide in the paint.
  • Remove algae / fungus by high-pressure washing.
  • Treat surface with Nippon Fungicidal Wash.
  • Wash again to remove any residue. Allow wall to dry before applying Nippon Weatherbond.

    Efflorescence Causes Prevention / Remedies

  • Migration of water-soluble salts from cement-sand mixture to the surface, facilitate by moisture drying process.
  • Make sure the wall is sufficiently dry prior to paint
  • Make sure the wall is crack-free to avoid rainwater seepage.
  • For remedial action, remove the unstable paint film and depositing salts. Allow wall to dry thoroughly and repaint with recommended paint.

    How It Affects Paint Performance
    • Water within the walls are forced out through osmotic and capillary pressure.
    • Causes water marks on painted walls.
    • In severe cases, blisters are formed.
    • Peeling or/and efflorescence occurs.
    • For safe painting, moisture content should be below 16% (measured by protimeter) for concrete plaster.
NOTE: WALL SEALERS ARE NOT MEANT TO SEAL OFF TRAPPED MOISTURE IN THE WALLS. SEALER SERVES TO GIVE BETTER ALKALI RESISTANCE AND STRONG BONDING FOR BETTER ADHESION. MORE APPROPRIATELY, THE SEALER IS AN ALKALI RESISTING PRIMER.

    • Alkalinity above pH 12 is not recommended for painting
    • Normal safe painting for walls is within pH 9 and below.
    • For alkalinity above pH 9 but below pH 12; a coat of alkali resisting sealer (Nippon Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer) is recommended.
    • Wall Primers basically have higher binder content which are of alkali resistant grades.
      Eg: Styrene acrylics, Pure acrylics
The particle size of these primers are much smaller which creates stronger bonding and allows deeper substrate penetration for better adhesion.
