Transformation At our fingertips is a dazzling array of choices. We can change a room from powder blue to citron green in a single afternoon. In two or three evenings we can make our walls the colour and texture of a cloak in a painting by Caravaggio. We can create an El Greco sky, a dappled wall of Provence, or pale stripes that recall Paris in the springtime. Paint can turn a formal room into a cozy retreat, and can make a small dark corner seem airy and bright. With paint we do more than change the colour of the wall: we can change the mood and context of a room. Drab To Dramatic When designer Carleton Varney began work on Connecticut's Governor's Residence he found a "beige and crumbling" interior. To rejuvenate it, Varney chose a raspberry colour (Benjamin Moore 1336) for the receiving room and the two-story foyer. Varney maximised the sunroom with a lemon yellow for the walls, tempered by a pale blue ceiling (Benjamin Moore 666). The library was painted deep blue throughout (Benjamin Moore 667) and the white crown molding was lit up with a stripe of the sunroom's yellow.
