FAQ

Timber Finish FAQs

Timber Finish is a translucent, coloured wood varnish that enhances the natural wood grain while providing protection against moisture, UV rays, fungus and weathering. It is best suited for timber projects where you want the grain and natural character of the wood to remain visible.

Timbershade is a solid-colour, water-based paint that covers most of the wood grain and creates a more uniform, opaque finish. It can also be used on galvanised iron and fibre cement boards, making it more suitable for multi-surface projects.

In practical terms, choose Timber Finish for a natural timber look and Timbershade for a bold, solid-colour finish.

Timber Finish is a coloured, translucent wood finish rather than a completely clear varnish. Its transparent pigments add colour and depth while allowing the natural grain and texture of the wood to show through.

The final appearance may vary depending on the type and original colour of the wood. A thicker paint film may also produce a darker result.

Wood stain mainly changes or enhances the colour of wood by penetrating its surface, but it may provide limited surface protection on its own. Varnish forms a protective coating over the wood to improve resistance against moisture, wear and weather exposure.

Timber Finish combines both decorative and protective qualities: it adds translucent colour, highlights the wood grain and forms a durable varnish layer over the surface.

Yes. Timber Finish is formulated for both interior and exterior wood surfaces. It provides UV, moisture, fungus and weathering resistance, making it suitable for indoor timber features as well as outdoor wood exposed to Malaysia’s rain, heat and humidity.

For exterior use, proper surface preparation and the recommended number of coats are important for lasting performance.

Wood rot and staining are often associated with prolonged moisture exposure, water penetration, fungus, mould and insufficient surface protection. These issues are especially important to address in Malaysia’s humid climate. Keep the wood dry, improve ventilation and repair any leaks or sources of persistent moisture before working on refinishing.

Once the surface is clean, dry and properly prepared, apply a protective wood finish such as Timber Finish. Its preservative technology and moisture-resistant coating help protect against mould, wood rot and weather-related deterioration.

Timber Finish forms a flexible protective film that helps prevent moisture from penetrating the wood. Its UV resistance helps minimise fading and maintain colour depth, while its weathering resistance protects against rain, heat, humidity and temperature changes, making it suitable for Malaysian climate.

The flexible formulation also accommodates natural movement in the wood, helping reduce cracks and coating damage over time.

Yes. Timber Finish forms a water-resistant coating that helps block moisture from seeping into properly prepared wood surfaces. This supports longer timber life and helps reduce the risk of moisture-related deterioration.

However, it is a protective wood varnish rather than a dedicated waterproofing membrane. Persistent leaks, standing water and moisture entering from behind the wood should be resolved before application.

Make sure the wood is clean, dry and free from dust, oil, wax and other contaminants. Sand the surface using Grade 80 or 100 sandpaper until smooth, then remove all sanding residue.

Where necessary, fill open wood grain with an appropriate filler and sand it level. Any wax must be thoroughly removed because it can affect coating adhesion and drying.

Remove all loose, unstable or peeling coating, along with dust, oil, wax and other contaminants. Sand the remaining sound coating until smooth to improve adhesion, then clean and dry the surface thoroughly.

If raised wood fibres appear after the first coat, lightly dry-sand the surface before applying the next coat for a smoother finish.

A primer or sealer is not required under the standard Timber Finish coating system. Apply Timber Finish directly to properly prepared bare wood or a sound, compatible existing coating.

For previously treated, waxed or unusual timber surfaces, consult Nippon Paint to confirm the appropriate preparation before application.

Apply two to three coats of Timber Finish for even colour and effective protection. Allow approximately eight hours before applying the next coat.

The final colour and gloss may vary depending on the wood type, original colour and amount of product applied. Applying additional coats may result in a darker and glossier appearance. Refer Technical Data Sheet

Timber Finish is a practical choice when you want to add colour to wood without hiding its natural grain. It provides a translucent varnish finish together with protection against moisture, UV rays, fungus, wood rot and outdoor weathering.

It is particularly suitable for wooden doors, window frames, fences, pergolas, timber panels, outdoor furniture and other projects where both natural appearance and lasting protection are important.

Timber Finish is formulated to withstand Malaysia’s hot and humid climate, including exposure to sunlight, rain, heat and temperature changes. Its flexible paint film moves with the wood, helping reduce cracking and film damage as the timber expands or contracts.

It also provides UV, fungus and moisture resistance, helping outdoor timber retain its colour, strength and natural appearance for longer.

Yes. Timber Finish has undergone an in-house adhesion test based on ASTM D3359, which evaluates how well the coating adheres to the surface using a tape test.

Its technical data sheet also documents its flexible-film, moisture-blocking, UV-resistant, fungus-resistant and weather-resistant performance. For the best results, these protective qualities depend on correct surface preparation and application of the recommended coating thickness and number of coats. Refer Technical Data Sheet
