Solar reflective paint is an exterior coating designed to reflect more solar heat away from the wall instead of allowing it to be absorbed.
Nippon Paint Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme uses Sunblock Technology to reduce exterior wall surface temperature by up to 5°C, helping to reduce heat build-up inside the home and potentially lessen reliance on air conditioning. Actual results may vary depending on the colour, wall orientation, building design and surrounding conditions.
Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme combines Quartz Technology with Sunblock Technology for enhanced solar heat reflection and protection against intense UV exposure. While other Weatherbond® paints with Quartz Technology also provide a harder, more durable paint film, Solareflect Extreme is specifically developed for heat-exposed exterior walls and can reduce wall surface temperature by up to 5°C. It also includes Colour Care, Keep Clean and Microblock Technologies for colour retention, dirt resistance and protection against fungus and algae.
Especially in Malaysia, choose a weather-resistant exterior paint with high UV resistance, good colour retention and solar heat-reflective properties to withstand hot sunny ray. Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme is formulated for intense sunlight and tropical conditions, combining Sunblck Technology, Quartz Technology and Colour Care Technology to reduce heat absorption and protect the paint film against UV-related deterioration.
Lighter exterior colours generally absorb less solar heat than very dark colours, making whites, off-whites, light greys and pale neutral shades practical choices for highly exposed walls. However, colour is only one factor; using solar reflective and UV-resistant exterior paint is also important for maintaining surface temperature and colour durability.
Common signs include fading, a chalky or powdery surface, a dull appearance, uneven colour, cracking, flaking and peeling. Strong sunlight and repeated heating and cooling can gradually weaken the paint film, while rain and humidity may worsen existing damage. Early inspection and repainting can help prevent the exposed wall underneath from deteriorating further.
Strong sunlight can weaken the paint’s pigments and binders, causing the colour to fade and the surface to become chalky. Exterior walls also heat up during the day and cool down later, and this repeated temperature change can gradually strain the paint film, leading to cracks or peeling. Poor surface preparation, trapped moisture or an unsuitable painting system may make these problems worse.
Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme contains Solar Reflective Technology designed to reflect a greater portion of solar energy away from the exterior surface. This reduces the amount of heat absorbed by the wall and helps limit heat transfer into the building.
Its solar reflectance, thermal emittance and Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) performance have been evaluated using recognised test methods. Refer Technical Data Sheet
Sunblock Technology improves the coating’s ability to reflect solar heat rather than allowing it to accumulate within the wall. Testing by the Solar Energy Research Institute at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia indicates that Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme can reduce exterior wall surface temperature by up to 5°C. The actual reduction will depend on factors such as paint colour, sun intensity, wall direction and building conditions.
Remove loose or defective paint, chalk, dust, dirt, grease, fungus, algae and other contaminants. Repair cracks and uneven areas with a suitable exterior-grade repair compound, sand the repaired areas smooth and allow the wall to dry completely before painting. For best results, the wall’s moisture content should be below 16% and its alkalinity below pH 9. Refer Technical Data Sheet
Yes. A suitable water-based exterior wall sealer is recommended before applying the topcoat, especially on new, porous, powdery, skim-coated or repaired surfaces. Nippon Paint’s recommended system includes one coat of an appropriate exterior sealer, followed by two coats of Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme. Suitable options listed in the technical data sheet include 8100 Weatherbond® Sealer, 5100 Wall Sealer, 8000 Expresskote Sealer, Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer or Hi-Bond Wall Sealer for certain surfaces.
Cracks should be repaired with a suitable exterior-grade filler or repair compound and sanded smooth after drying. Fungus and algae should be removed and treated with Fungicidal Wash, while the cause of recurring moisture must be addressed before repainting. Efflorescence should be brushed or cleaned away only after the wall has fully dried and its moisture or water-seepage source has been resolved. Refer Technical Data Sheet
If you are residing in Malaysia, and your wall is exposed to the sun and rain, Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme is a good solution. Not only does it provide solar heat reflection, but also resistance against dirt, watermarks, fungus, algae, efflorescence, acid rain and colour fading, while providing up to 12 years of protection when used with the recommended painting system. It is suitable for masonry, brick, plaster and fibreboard surfaces.
Yes. Its solar reflectance, thermal emittance and Solar Reflectance Index were tested using ASTM E903, ASTM C1371 and ASTM E1980 methods. Its thermal and energy-saving performance was also independently evaluated by the Solar Energy Research Institute at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, supporting the claim that it can reduce exterior wall surface temperature by up to 5°C. Refer Technical Data Sheet
Yes. Weatherbond® Solareflect Extreme complies with the Singapore Green Label and SIRIM ECO-Label requirements, certified through the Singapore Environment Council and SIRIM QAS. Its technical documentation also lists testing for solar reflectance, dirt pick-up resistance, colour retention, accelerated weathering and wet scrub resistance. Some performance tests were conducted independently, while others were carried out in-house according to recognised ASTM standards. Refer Technical Data Sheet
