FAQ

Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss FAQs

High-gloss exterior paint creates a smooth, reflective finish that gives outside walls a more polished and luxurious appearance. Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss is best suited for masonry, brick, plaster and fibreboard exterior surfaces where both decorative shine and durable weather protection are desired. Because gloss reflects light and can highlight uneven areas, proper surface preparation is especially important.

Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss provides excellent water resistance and helps reduce visible watermarks caused by rain on exterior walls. However, it is an exterior decorative coating rather than a dedicated waterproofing system. Any ongoing leakage, water seepage or rising damp should be repaired before painting, as moisture entering from behind the wall may still cause paint failure.

For highly damp areas or surfaces with persistent water exposure, explore Nippon Paint’s waterproofing solutions to identify a more suitable system before applying the exterior topcoat.

A high-gloss finish gives exterior walls a brighter, more premium appearance and is generally easier to wipe clean than a flat, highly porous surface. Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss also provides protection against harsh weather, UV rays, watermarks, dirt penetration, fungus, algae, alkalinity and efflorescence, while helping the colour and gloss remain attractive for longer.

Masonry, brick, plaster and fibreboard exterior surfaces can be affected by rain, moisture, UV exposure, dirt and changing weather conditions. Common issues include visible watermarks, colour fading, dirt penetration, fungus and algae growth, efflorescence, and gradual surface deterioration. Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss helps protect properly prepared surfaces against these problems while providing a durable, high-gloss finish.

Begin by repairing cracks, leaks and other sources of water penetration. The wall should then be cleaned, completely dried and coated with a suitable exterior sealer before applying two coats of Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss. Its water-resistant paint film helps reduce visible rain marks, but persistent seepage must be resolved at the source rather than covered with paint alone.

Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss uses a water-based acrylic coating system that dries to form a smooth, durable and reflective paint film. The water acts mainly as the carrier during application and evaporates as the coating dries, leaving behind the pigments and binder that form the glossy protective surface. It combines this finish with Quartz and Sunblock Technologies for exterior durability, UV protection and gloss retention.

Yes. Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss is formulated with Microblock and Keep Clean Technologies to help resist fungus, algae growth and dirt penetration. These features help exterior walls stay cleaner and maintain their appearance for longer, although existing fungus and algae must be removed and treated before repainting.

Remove loose or defective paint, chalky residue, dust, dirt, grease, fungus, algae and other contaminants. Repair cracks and uneven areas with Nippon CrackREPAIR 1000 Compound or another suitable exterior-grade filler, then sand the repaired areas smooth. Allow the wall to dry fully before painting; Nippon Paint recommends wall moisture below 16% and alkalinity below pH 9. Refer Technical Data Sheet

Yes. A suitable exterior wall sealer is recommended to improve adhesion, control uneven absorption and create a stable base for the high-gloss topcoat. Depending on the surface condition, the recommended option may be 8100 Weatherbond® Sealer, 5100 Wall Sealer, 8000 Expresskote Sealer, Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer or Hi-Bond Wall Sealer for powdery or skim-coated surfaces.

Apply one coat of the appropriate sealer, followed by two coats of Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss. Refer Technical Data Sheet

Remove loose paint and repair cracks with a suitable exterior-grade filler before sanding the area smooth. Fungus and algae should be removed and treated with Fungicidal Wash. Efflorescence should only be cleaned after the underlying moisture source has been identified and resolved; otherwise, the white deposits may return through the new coating. Refer Technical Data Sheet

Apply a minimum of two coats of Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss over one coat of a suitable exterior sealer. Allow approximately two to three hours between topcoats, depending on temperature and humidity. For the best gloss and protection, apply the paint evenly and preferably without dilution; when thinning is required, use no more than 5% water.

Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss combines a luxurious glossy finish with protection against harsh weather, UV rays, rain marks, dirt, fungus, algae, alkalinity and efflorescence. It is suitable for Malaysian homeowners who want exterior walls to make a stronger visual statement without compromising on weather resistance and long-term durability.

Weatherbond® Hi-Gloss offers up to 12 years of exterior protection when applied to a properly prepared surface as part of the recommended sealer and topcoat system. Actual durability may vary according to surface condition, workmanship, colour, location, weather exposure and ongoing maintenance.

The technical data sheet lists in-house testing based on recognised standards, including ASTM D3719 for dirt pick-up resistance, ASTM G154 for colour retention under accelerated UV exposure and ASTM D2486 for wet-scrub resistance. It also provides technical specifications covering recommended coats, coverage, drying time, surface preparation and the complete coating system. Refer Technical Data Sheet
