FAQ

Weatherbond® Ultimate FAQs

Weatherbond® Ultimate is formulated for exterior walls exposed to strong sunlight, heavy rain, humidity and temperature changes, making it suitable for Malaysia's tropical weather. Its Quartz and Fibra Technology reinforces the paint film with microfibres to help resist cracking, peeling, chalking and water penetration. It also protects against UV rays, external dirt, acid rain, fungus, algae and efflorescence.

Weatherbond® Ultimate is positioned as the highest-performing product in the Weatherbond® range, combining Quartz Technology with fibre reinforcement for stronger paint-film integrity. It also brings together Sunblock, Colour Care, Keep Clean and Microblock Technologies for heat reflection, colour retention, dirt resistance and protection against biological growth.

Other Weatherbond® products may focus more specifically on benefits such as anti-dirt performance, solar reflection, high gloss or essential exterior protection.

For houses in Malaysia, exterior protection should account for strong sunlight, heavy rain, humidity, dirt, fungus, algae and temperature changes. Different exterior surfaces may require different coatings, but look for exterior wall paint that offers UV resistance, water resistance, dirt resistance, colour retention and protection against fungus, algae and efflorescence. A strong yet flexible paint film also helps reduce cracking, peeling and premature weathering over time.

Common signs include fading, uneven colour, a chalky or powdery surface, visible dirt streaks, cracking, blistering, flaking and peeling. You may also notice white powdery deposits caused by efflorescence, dark fungus or algae growth, or watermarks after rain. These signs can indicate that the paint film has weakened or that moisture and surface defects need to be treated before repainting.

Exterior walls are continuously exposed to dust, pollution, rain, moisture and UV rays. Dirt can settle on or penetrate a weakened paint film, while sunlight gradually breaks down pigments and causes colours to fade.

Patchiness may also result from uneven application, different surface absorption levels, moisture problems or painting over areas that were not properly cleaned, repaired or sealed.

Quartz Technology helps create a tough paint film, while Fibra Technology uses microfibres to reinforce the coating against cracking, peeling and other weather-related damage. The product also provides resistance against UV degradation, acid rain, dirt penetration and visible watermarks caused by heavy rainfall. Together, these features help preserve the wall surface and its appearance for longer, suitable for exterior walls in Malaysia.

Yes. Weatherbond® Ultimate is formulated to resist fungus and algae growth and to protect against alkalinity and efflorescence. However, existing growth or white deposits must be properly removed, and the source of moisture or water seepage should be resolved before repainting. Painting over an untreated problem may cause it to return.

Remove loose or defective paint, chalky residue, dust, dirt, grease, fungus, algae and other contaminants. Repair cracks and uneven areas with Nippon CrackREPAIR 1000 Compound or another suitable exterior-grade filler, then sand the repaired areas smooth. Allow the wall to dry completely before painting; the recommended moisture content is below 16%, with alkalinity below pH 9. Refer Technical Data Sheet.

Yes. A suitable water-based exterior sealer is recommended to improve adhesion, control surface absorption and provide a stable base for the topcoat. Depending on the surface condition, the recommended option may be 8100 Weatherbond® Sealer, 5100 Wall Sealer, 8000 Expresskote Sealer, Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer or Hi-Bond Wall Sealer for powdery or skim-coated surfaces. Apply one coat of the appropriate sealer, followed by two coats of Weatherbond® Ultimate. Refer Technical Data Sheet.

Remove all loose and peeling paint until a firm surface is reached. Repair cracks and uneven areas with a suitable exterior-grade repair compound, then sand them smooth after drying. Fungus and algae should be cleaned and treated with Fungicidal Wash. Efflorescence should be removed only after identifying and resolving the moisture source, as repainting alone will not prevent it from returning. Refer Technical Data Sheet.

The recommended system is one coat of a suitable exterior sealer followed by two coats of Weatherbond® Ultimate. Allow approximately two hours before recoating, although drying time may vary according to temperature and humidity. The paint should preferably be applied without dilution for the best performance; when necessary, use no more than 5% water.

Weatherbond® Ultimate provides broad protection against the major conditions affecting exterior walls, including UV exposure, rain, watermarks, dirt, acid rain, fungus, algae, alkalinity and efflorescence. Its fibre-reinforced paint film is designed to withstand severe tropical conditions while helping preserve the wall's surface integrity and appearance.

For homes in Malaysia, Weatherbond® Ultimate is a suitable choice for maintaining a long-lasting exterior finish while strengthening the walls against harsh and changing weather conditions.

Colour Care Technology and UV resistance help reduce pigment degradation caused by sunlight. The reinforced paint film also resists chalking, dirt penetration and weathering, which can otherwise make colours appear faded or uneven. Selected colours additionally have high Solar Reflectance Index values, helping reduce surface heat and support longer-lasting colour performance.

Weatherbond® Ultimate has undergone in-house testing based on recognised standards, including ASTM D3719 for dirt pick-up resistance, ASTM G154 for colour retention under QUV-A exposure, ASTM G155 for accelerated weathering and ASTM D2486 for wet-scrub resistance. Its technical data sheet also states that it delivers up to 15 years of protection under extreme tropical conditions when applied as part of the recommended system. Refer Technical Data Sheet.
