FAQ

Hydro Finish FAQs

Low-VOC paint contains a lower level of volatile organic compounds, which are chemicals that can evaporate into the air during painting and drying. Choosing low-VOC paint helps reduce strong paint odours and indoor air pollutants, making it a more suitable option for occupied indoor spaces.

Hydro Finish is formulated with low VOC and low odour for a more comfortable painting experience and better indoor air quality.

Hydro Finish is recommended for interior wood and metal surfaces because its water-based, low-VOC and low-odour formula is well suited to occupied indoor spaces. It can be used on furniture, doors, windows, handrails, door frames and other fixtures.

For exterior wood or metal exposed to rain, strong sunlight and changing weather, use a Nippon Paint coating system specifically recommended for outdoor conditions such as Timbershade, Timber Finish, Odourlite Gloss Finish, Odourlite Soft Matt Finish or 9000 Gloss Finish, depending on the surface and preferred finish.

Hydro Finish is suitable for properly prepared interior wood and metal surfaces, including wooden furniture, doors, windows, cabinets, metal handrails, door frames and fixtures.

Its low-odour, low-VOC and antibacterial properties make it especially useful in homes, offices and other occupied indoor spaces where comfort and indoor air quality are important.

Yes. Hydro Finish is available in Soft Matt and High Gloss finishes.

Choose Soft Matt for a refined, low-sheen appearance, or High Gloss for a smoother and more reflective finish. Both options provide the same core benefits of a water-based, low-odour and low-VOC coating for interior wood and metal.

For home DIY projects, wood and metal surfaces are often painted in occupied indoor spaces where ventilation may be limited. Low-VOC paint releases fewer airborne pollutants during application and drying, helping reduce strong paint smells and minimise the impact on indoor air quality.

This makes it a practical choice for furniture, doors, windows and fixtures in homes, offices and other frequently used spaces.

Hydro Finish uses a water-based, low-VOC formulation that limits the release of airborne pollutants during application and drying. It also produces less odour than conventional solvent-based wood and metal paints, helping create a more comfortable painting environment.

Good ventilation should still be maintained while painting and until the coating has fully dried.

Yellowing may occur when certain paint binders age or react to heat, limited light, smoke, grease and other indoor contaminants. It is often more visible on white and pale colours.

Hydro Finish is formulated with yellowing resistance to help light-coloured wood and metal surfaces maintain their original appearance for longer.

Hydro Finish is suitable for wooden and metal surfaces in children’s rooms and food preparation areas because its water-based, low-VOC and low-odour formulation helps reduce emissions during painting and drying. Once fully dried, its antibacterial properties help support cleaner painted surfaces.

However, it is not intended for direct food-contact surfaces.

Make sure the wood is dry and free from dirt, grease, dust, wax and other contaminants. Sand the surface until smooth, then remove all sanding residue before applying the recommended primer and topcoat system.

For previously painted wood, remove loose or flaking paint and lightly sand the remaining sound coating to improve adhesion.

Refer Technical Data Sheet

The metal surface must be dry and free from rust, mill scale, grease, oil, dust and other contaminants. Ferrous metal should be sanded or wire-brushed to remove rust before cleaning.

For aluminium and galvanised metal, thorough degreasing is required. Loose paint should be removed, defective areas sanded smooth and exposed sections spot-primed before repainting.

Refer Technical Data Sheet

For interior wood, metal, aluminium handrails and door frames, the recommended base coat is Hydro Wood & Metal Primer. Depending on the condition and type of surface, one or two coats may be required before applying Hydro Finish. Refer Technical Data Sheet

The final system should be completed with two coats of Hydro Finish in either High Gloss or Soft Matt.

Hydro Finish should normally be applied over the recommended water-based primer rather than directly onto bare wood or metal. The primer improves adhesion, creates a more even base and supports the durability of the topcoat.

Bare wood and metal should therefore be properly prepared and coated with Hydro Wood & Metal Primer before applying Hydro Finish.

Apply two to three coats of Hydro Finish, depending on the colour, surface condition and required finish. Allow approximately two to three hours before applying the next coat.

The paint is touch-dry in about 30 minutes and hard-dry in approximately one hour under normal conditions, although drying may take longer in humid or poorly ventilated areas.

Hydro Finish combines the protection and decorative finish expected from wood and metal paint with a water-based, low-odour and low-VOC formulation. It is also fast-drying, resistant to yellowing and fungus, and available in both Soft Matt and High Gloss finishes.

Its dry-film antibacterial properties provide additional protection against bacteria such as MRSA, E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, making it especially suitable for occupied indoor spaces.

Hydro Finish has a water-based formulation with low VOC, low odour and near-zero VOC emissions, helping reduce its environmental impact and the amount of airborne pollutants released indoors.

It is also part of Nippon Paint’s Green Choice range and is associated with recognised green-product certifications, supporting its use in more environmentally conscious homes and businesses. Refer Technical Data Sheet

Hydro Finish uses advanced formulation technology to combine dry-film antibacterial protection with a water-based, low-VOC and low-odour coating system. Its antibacterial agents help inhibit the growth of bacteria on the dried paint surface, while the water-based formulation helps reduce strong odours and airborne emissions during application and drying.

This allows Hydro Finish to support cleaner painted surfaces while providing a more comfortable indoor painting experience.
